Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to sew and quilt as much as I had hoped. However, we are about to begin a new year and it is always a good opportunity for me to "re-evaluate" my life and change focus if needed. I hope to do just that and put more focus on my sewing and quilting than I have done over the previous couple of years. One of the things that I would like to do is "stretch" my capabilities and try new things. One of the things that I tried over the month of December was some "hand quilting".

I had been promising my nephew a pocket pillow to hold his books but was unable to get it done for his birthday in September so I thought that I would redeem myself for Christmas. I really like how it turned out. The fabric I used was "On Our Way" by Riley Blake. I essentially made up my own pattern. I used a 14 inch pillow form. For the pocket I used one 4 1/2 inch strip and two 2 1/2 inch strips. I embroidered my nephew's name on the middle strip. The font I used was the Cutie Patootie Alphabet by Bunnycup Embroidery. I just love their embroidery designs. They always embroider up very very well.

For the pocket I hand quilted using the DMC 8 perle cotton in black. I just loved the result. For the pillow front, I hand quilted using that same black perle cotton every inch. Hand quilting was very therapeutic after I bought myself a thimble because you have to use a larger needle when quilting with the perle cotton, which was hurting my index finger pushing it through the quilt sandwich.

Once I was finished, I sewed it together with an envelope enclosure back, which I forgot to get a picture of. But here is the finished product after the books are added. Plus I added a little lego set as well, what boy does not love legos!
It was a crazy busy summer and so far has also been a crazy busy start to the school year for us. My youngest has had a hard time adjusting to our new schedule, but slowly things are improving.

Well now that I am back, the first thing I decided to do was join a quilt along. Angie from the Gnome Angel is hosting the Farmer's Wife 1930's Sampler Quilt Sew Along.

The fabric that I am going to use throughout the quilt along will be from Bonnie & Camille. I decided to stick to one designer, but am using a bunch of their fabric lines such as Vintage Modern, Scrumptious, Daysail and Vintage Picnic. I have to wait to use the Vintage Picnic line because that one does not come out until February 2016.

I will be hand piecing these blocks because I wanted to make this quilt like someone would in the 1930's. I have never hand pieced before, so I am going to leave myself open to use my sewing machine if I get too far behind. I have totally enjoyed this process. It is a great thing for me to do while I watch TV with my children and my husband. I feel like I can spend some quality time with them as well as enjoy something that I love as well. It also helps that all the new Fall shows are coming out too!

So first up is Block #12 - Becky.

It turned out perfect! Again I highly recommend hand piecing. It is very therapeutic and relaxing. Here is the second block #16 - Bonnie. I really like how this block turned out as well.

I didn't complete the 3rd block #8 - Aunt, but will get caught up sometime next week.
We wrapped up our last week of school yesterday and had Mae's dance recital this evening. It will be so nice to enjoy some relaxing days by the pool, sleeping in, and finally some time for quilting. We have had a lot of yard work lately and still quite a bit more to do, but hopefully with a lot less running around more stuff in the house and around the house can get completed, which brings me to my goal for June. I started these pillow shams about a year ago now and it is time to get them finished. It is a tutorial by Maureen Cracknell from Maureen Cracknell Handmade, which you can find here. My youngest daughter has a Minnie Mouse bedroom, so I am going to make one for her in Minnie Mouse. I haven't started hers, but I am hoping that both of them go pretty quickly and will give me an excuse to put out the summer sheets, wash their comforters, and summer-ize their bedrooms.

This is my very first time ever entering this quilt competition and I am extremely excited to be a part of it. There are always so many beautiful quilts that get entered and I love to see everyone's hard work and hear the "stories" that go along with them.

This quilt definitely has a special story. I must say that this quilt was made for a fighter. My sister was pregnant with her first born daughter and she ended up delivering early due to severe complications with pre-eclampsia. The baby had quite the up and down road in the NICU for 5 weeks, but she is now home with her mother and doing well. She will continue to be monitored closely by her doctors over the next year, but like I said this beautiful little girl is definitely a fighter.

Now more details about the quilt.

My sister found this pattern she liked on pinterest, so I drew it out on graph paper because I was unable to purchase a pattern for it. She chose the same color pallet for the quilt as she had in her wedding and I must say that I just love how all these different fabrics came together and complimented each other perfectly. I especially love the gray dot background I ended up using. My sister's favorite fabric was this coral cloud fabric which I used on both the front and the back of the quilt.

I made the quilt out of 48 6.5 inch (unfinished) half square triangles. The quilt finished at 36 inches by 48 inches. I chose a wavy quilt pattern, which coincided with one of the fabrics used in the quilt. I also used this same coral wavy pattern for my binding.

I "borrowed" the quilt back from my niece because I photographed it back in February 2015 when I had finished it. During that time it was winter, which equals very cold drab weather and not the greatest pictures. I must say that I love these pictures so much more plus now you are also able to see my adorable little model. She is definitely a keeper!
I wish I could have photographed it for you guys because the cover is just super cute, but I purchased it on my Kindle which does not photograph well. Bummer. It is such an awesome book though. Something that I really need to read right now. It basically talks about how to "fall" in love with the home you already have. In Chapter 4, she talks about your home love language and what she means by that is your home is your own blank canvas waiting for you to put your own touch on using your own creative talents. Well here I am a quilter, and do you know that if you were to walk off the street right now into my home there would not be a trace of my love for quilting anywhere! I have no quilted pillows, no quilts, no table runners, or anything like that in the main living areas of my home! Nothing! Anyways, this month I am going to change that.

I just love half square triangles. I love to make them and I have a machine quilting pattern that I have wanted to try for some time now. I drew out a simple design that is pretty common in the quilting world that will work well with the machine quilting design that I have in my head. The fabric collection that I have wanted to accent my living room with is called "Rebel Roses" by Heather Mulder. I am not sure if you can even buy it anymore. I have had the fabric for several years now. Big surprise. It has been collecting dust in my basement for awhile and now it is time to finally cut into it. I can't wait to start to add more of "me" to our home by taking the first step and doing something simple like make this pillow!
But here is this week's homework. I will say I loved Melissa's pressing tip. I had never pressed from the front like that before and it really made a difference so the strips didn't stretch at all. Thanks Melissa! First up is Melia's quilt top, which will be made into a large floor pillow:
I am so excited to finally share with you my finished goal for February! I couldn't post until today because today was my sister's baby shower and I did not want her to see this ahead of time. I wanted it to be a surprise and I just loved how it turned out! I can't wait to photograph baby Chloe on it. Yes, my sister's baby decided to show up a little bit early, but thankfully everyone is doing great and hopefully Chloe will get out of the hospital soon!

So let's get to the pictures because I know that it is everyone's favorite part. At least it is mine. Here is the finished quilt top before quilting!

The quilt was a little bit harder to photograph then I had hoped because it was kind of big (36 x 48 inches), but that should make it a great play quilt for Chloe to play on. I decided to quilt wavy lines on it because I did not want to detract from the pattern and I wanted it to be soft for Chloe to lay on so dense quilting would not have worked either.

Since I had leftover fabric, I also made her a couple of bibs using Camille Roskelley's Charming Bibs pattern. This is a really great pattern and it makes some nice larger bibs for when the kids get older. Here is Bib #1 modeled by my youngest.
Melissa from Happy Quilting is hosting a quilt along in conjunction with the release of her new book Irish Chain Quilts that is coming out in April. I am really excited for her. This is her very first book! You can see the details of the Quilt Along here.

I have decided to make 2 wall hangings that I am going to make into very large floor pillows for my girls. I have been wanting to make the girls some of these for quite some time. This week our goal was to cut everything out, so here is Melia's:

Melia's is being made out of Scrumptious by Bonnie & Camille. Her favorite color is orange, so she is just going to love this. The (A) represents the pieces for the X block. I have never sewn with triangles, so this will definitely be a first for me. I am just a little bit nervous about this. Wish me luck! (B) is the Petal Block. Again I have never done applique before, so this will be another first for me! Man, Melissa from Happy Quilting is really pushing my quilting boundaries that is for sure. (C) represents the Square Block. Shown below is Mae's future pillow:

Mae's pillow is being made out of Monkey Tales by Erin Michael. She is so excited about it. She is in ballet and loves pink and purple, so this should hopefully be a hit! Although she is my more picky child. Sorry the photo didn't turn out as good. I couldn't get the lighting quite right and the fabrics are light. The A, B, and C all represent the same as Melia's above. Mae's looks a little bit different because I am only using 4 fabric choices with hers and Melia's I decided to use some fabric from my stash and cut into a fat eighth bundle. I am pretty excited to get started on this project. Hopefully it turns out as well as I hope.
Talk about squeaking this one in at the last minute! I literally just finished, which is why my photographs aren't the greatest, but I did manage to sew and trim all 48 half square triangles!!! Woohoo! And I have the trimmings to prove it!

I am saving all of my trimmings to make a new bed for our newest family member. We have had her for about 6 weeks now. The kids just love her! I read in a magazine somewhere that fabric scraps make good filling for dog beds, so I am going to try it! I think by Fall 2015 I just might have enough.

I will be making my goals a little bit smaller, so they are more achievable.

Over the past summer, my sister shared that she was pregnant with her first child. To say that the family was excited was an understatement! Around Halloween, she found out she was having a girl.

She decided on this kind of funky chevron quilt, which I have drawn out. She saw a picture of it on pinterest but there was no link to a pattern or anything like that, so I drew it up on graph paper and am just going to roll with it. This is the first time that I have ever done this! Hopefully it turns out.

She chose the following fabrics:

Aren't they pretty together. My sisters and I are hosting a baby shower for her on February 28, 2015. I would like to have this quilt completed by then. So the plan for this month is to sew up 48 half square triangles. I just can't wait to see how this project comes together.

I must say that these past several months have truly been an adjustment for me. Trying to find my new work / home / kids / quilting balance has been rather difficult. Over the past month, I have finally gotten back into my quilting mojo again and it really felt great. I have so missed this part of my life, and my New Year's resolution for 2015 is to make more time for it. It definitely makes me a happier person!

Last Summer, I found out that the girl I used to babysit for was having a baby girl. Talk about making me feel old! During the summer, I had also purchased this fabric collection "Into the Woods" by Vanessa from Lella Boutique. I had been eyeing this collection for quite some time because I was going to use it to make something for myself. It has all the colors that I love in it. I knew that it would be perfect for this new little baby girl as well. Her mom shares my same favorite color red and everything about this collection just screams "Baby Girl".

The quilt pattern I chose was the Hourglass Quilt by Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew. You can find the tutorial here. It is one of my favorite quilt blocks to make. I quilted it up using some wavy quilting to "soften" it up a little bit since it is a baby quilt. I must say it turned out awesome and I absolutely love it!

I chose the white floral pattern from the fabric collection for the back of the quilt.

The binding is a Moda Bells solid called Tomato Soup. I like that I put a solid binding on it, so it didn't distract from the busyness of the quilt.

Now for the pics of my "adorable" little model. Isn't she just precious. I think she likes it and it will be a great quilt for her to have "playtime" on! Happy 1 month old Birthday Sweetie! You are definitely a keeper!

I am super excited to share some new information with all of you. First of all, we all know that my job had gotten quite crazy over the winter. After a lot of prayers and soul searching, I had put my notice in at work. I had given them 9 weeks notice, but that turned into 12 weeks! During our search for a new person, they had also convinced me to still stay on, but at a much lesser capacity. I was able to pick my hours and what I wanted to do. Win win I say! So I went down from 36 hours a week to 12 hours a week, which means I get to spend a lot more precious time with the little kiddos above! I also get to spend more time making my home into my "dream" home, which has been put on the back burner for the past several years. And A LOT more time on quilting! This means a lot more fun quilting posts coming your way. I have projects that I want to make for my home, gifts for others, and more practicing on my free motion quilting!

Now on to my current WIP! Many of you have seen all over blog land these adorable "Alphabet" quilts and I couldn't help but start to make one as well. I want to make a "Special Alphabet Book" for each of my girls for Christmas using these Alphabet blocks. The fabric line I am using is call "Scrumptious" by Bonnie and Camille. The project calls for one Jelly Roll and a background fabric. I am so excited to see this quilt come together. Plus it doesn't hurt that these blocks are a lot of fun to make!
She had a very short period of time in which to work with and she wanted to give this quilt to her dad for his birthday. She asked for volunteers to help her make some of the squares as well as help from a long arm quilter that would quilt it for her due to its large size. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for me to be able to practice my quilting. In addition, I had never quilted a quilt that was that large and I really wanted to try that. Em and I connected and she sent me the quilt several weeks ago now. I quilted it up for her in a free motion loops and stars pattern. I am so happy with how it turned out. Here is a picture of the entire front of the quilt.
I am one of the room parents for my daughter's first grade class. The room parents, my friend Becky and I, wanted to give her teacher something that could "brighten" up her classroom but still be useful. She has a sink in her classroom, and we thought that she could use some fun new dish towels and cute antibacterial hand soaps to go with them.

I took my daughter, Melia, shopping with me and she picked out the soaps and the cute soap holder from Bath and Body Works. I love that place. I had a coupon and I needed more hand soap for our house, so that was a win win for us. Next, we went to Bed Bath and Beyond and picked up a package of Microfiber dish towels. Finally, our last stop was Joann's where she got to pick out some fun "teacher" fabric. I think she made the "perfect" fabric choice. Like mother like daughter right. I sure am hoping!

To make the towels, I used the tutorial from Natalia Bonner from Piece N Quilt, which you can find here. I love this tutorial. She is so thorough and I think the project went together perfectly. I had my friend Becky come over and help me. She just bought an embroidery machine and is learning how to use it and I thought it would be a fun project to do together! I must say it was! I bought the embroidery patterns from Bunnycup Embroidery. It is the School Sentiments collection. Their embroidery designs always and I do mean always embroider up so nicely for me! Didn't they turn out cute! I think I need to make some for myself now!
I finished putting together the 20 4-patch blocks that I needed, but I did not get a chance to embroider the remaining five squares. Here is the stack of 4 patch blocks I did finish.
I turned it in to the quilt shop earlier today, so now they have a sample to show people who are looking for a long arm quilter. Yea!!! Finally things are starting to get checked off my list. I quilted this using a pantograph called "Pumpkin Patch". It was a lot of fun to do. I am finding that I need a little bit more "detailed" pantographs because the ones that are a little bit more plain for some reason don't turn out as good for me. Or I just don't like them, but you got start somewhere right.

I am really hoping to finish this one on time! My adorable nephew is 15 months old and never got a quilt from me when he was born. Bad Aunty! I make a quilt for ALL my nieces and nephews, and since he is going to be a big brother in August, I have to get his quilt finished! Since I am going to have another baby quilt to make at the end of the summer. My goal for March is to embroider 5 squares with dragons and his name on the brown fabric shown below.
Over the weekend I was able to get my "quilt sample" pieced together at craft night with some friends. Woohoo!
I wasn't able to complete my January goal due to how crazy busy I was at work this past month. The beginning of the year is usually hard for accountants anyways, but the person who works for me needed surgery, so I had to do her job as well as inheriting payroll because our human resource person left in December! Ugh! Let's just say I am definitely not a fan of payroll and every other Thursday is not a fun day for me! With that being said, January is now over (Yea!!!) and the tax deadlines are met, so hopefully I can start to quilt again!

As you can see I didn't make it very far on my last month's goal of completing my quilt sample, so I am going to "repeat" my January goal for February. The plan is to get this quilt sample finished and off to my local quilt shop, so they have one of my "pieces" to show potential customers! So wish me luck!
I am not usually a resolution setter, but I am a goal setter. This year I have two big goals that I would like to accomplish in the upcoming year. The first one is to finally get my long arm quilting business started. The second one is to make a new "quilt" for my husband who has been patiently waiting for the past two years. I would like to make it his "big" Christmas present for 2014. Anyways, over the course of this year, I will be setting "smaller" goals so I can achieve both of these "larger" goals. I am really excited because Shanna from Fiber of All Sorts and Melissa from Sew Bitter Sweet Designs are planning on hosting a second year long "Lovely Year of Finishes".

My goal for January is to make one of two small samples for a local quilt shop that is going to recommend me for customers who need a long arm quilter.

I will be using this tutorial by Vanessa from Lella Boutique, which I have used before. You can see that post here. It is a nice simple pattern that would make a great quilt sample. I will be making it out of Sweetwater's Boo Crew fabric. I want to quilt it with a new "pantograph" design that I have been practicing called "modern twist".

Sometimes I feel like the holiday season is such a blur and I am a robot just going through the motions. I am trying really hard this year though to enjoy this holiday season because my kids are 6 and 2 and they are just growing up too fast. My oldest just lost her first tooth! Which means I haven't actually done much quilting or sewing these past couple of weeks. However, I did decide to sew up these super cute gift bags though. Aren't they just adorable?

I used this tutorial from Amy at Positively Splendid, which you can find here. They really are pretty easy to make. I made the smallest size, which fit gift cards and candy goodies perfectly.

I was also super exited because I finally received this book in the mail! I was so excited to get it. It is a signed copy of Quilting Wide Open Spaces by Judi Madsen, which you can purchase here. There are a few designs of hers that I would love to quilt up and this book tells you how to do just that.

Megan from Canoe Ridge Creations is hosting a quilt along for her Giant Starburst Quilt. Now I usually don't join quilt alongs because I have a really hard time following through with them, however, this one looks rather simple to do and it looks like I should be able to keep up. I am hoping anyways!

My plan is to do "Version 2" and make it for the couch that is in my quilting studio. I am going to use the following fabrics from Angela Yosten's Flats collection, which I purchased from the Fat Quarter Shop. I just love these fabrics.

The background fabric that I plan on using is this white, which is a Moda Bella Solid called Porcelain (9900-182).

For the binding, I plan on using another fabric from Angela Yosten's Flats collection called "Rouge on White Bias Stripe". I think the stripe and polka dot mix are going to look really nice for the finishing touch to this quilt.

I have also finished cutting out most of my fabrics. I ended up being several inches shy for the 11 1/2 inch squares for three of the color fabrics, so I ordered more fabric today. It should be in early next week for me to finish cutting up those 3 squares. However, for the most part I am ready for the next step, which is assembling the quilt top!
If you want to see more details on the Quilt Along please go here. Remember you can join in on the fun at any time!

I cannot believe we have reached the end! Time has just flown by. I must say that I have been thoroughly impressed with all of the calendars that I have seen so far! You guys really have done a remarkable job. I will say that this is the very first quilt along that I have actually been able to keep up with and see to fruition, so I am pretty proud of myself for that. I also want to give a special "Shout out" to my friend Janice over at Better off Thread. It has been such a pleasure hosting this quilt along with her and she has been a really awesome person to work with over the past couple of months. Okay, now to the fun part. We get to see everyone's finished project. I am so happy and pleased with how my calendar turned out. My kids just love this.

I decided to fill my calendar with a couple of things. My favorite items are these little holiday books. One package is called "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and the other one is "Frosty the Snoman". You can purchase them from Barnes and Noble for about $10.00 each. My oldest daughter is in first grade right now and we are currently working on her reading skills. Now these books might be a little easy for her, but I think they will be some fun quick reads for her to read to the family each night. I can't believe how perfectly one book fits into each pocket.
